Like traditionally licensed textbooks, open textbooks are written by experts in the field and many undergo a process of peer-review. Unlike the traditional publishing model, publishers and authors of open textbooks are funded through upfront payment models (philanthropic, publicly) instead of relying on sales to pay back their investments.
It is estimated by the College Board that undergraduate students can expect to pay upwards of $1,200 a year for textbooks and supplies and students in Associate or Bachelors's degree programs spend more on textbooks than students in Masters or Doctorate degree programs. The cost of textbooks impacts student success and retention. Students who participated in the 2018 Florida Student Textbook Survey of more than 21,000 students shared how the high-cost of course materials impacted them:
