Five Steps of OER Adoption

The process of adopting OER in a course varies greatly. Sometimes there is a one-to-one open textbook available that can easily replace existing high-cost textbooks, but not always. Plan for a year long process to convert courses.

  1. Review the materials, try using this criteria, or the attached OER Adoption Guide.
  2. Modify the OER (if necessary). See this Adaptation Guide.
  3. Attribution of OER. Read about how to attribute Creative Commons licensed work from CCOER here
  4. Approval (if needed). Most adoptions of required course materials must be approved within your department.
  5. Delivery of OER to Students through:
    • Course Management System
    • Bookstore
    • Library
