Five Steps of OER Adoption
The process of adopting OER in a course varies greatly. Sometimes there is a one-to-one open textbook available that can easily replace existing high-cost textbooks, but not always. Plan for a year long process to convert courses.
- Review the materials, try using this criteria, or the attached OER Adoption Guide.
- Modify the OER (if necessary). See this Adaptation Guide.
- Attribution of OER. Read about how to attribute Creative Commons licensed work from CCOER here.
- Approval (if needed). Most adoptions of required course materials must be approved within your department.
- Delivery of OER to Students through:

Adoption Guide – 2nd Edition by ISBN: 9781774200261Publication Date: September 27, 2019This guide was originally created by BCcampus Open Education with the assistance of several BC faculty and staff who attended the 2016 Adoption Workshop Development Sprint. Since then, open education has evolved and in response this guide has been updated and expanded into four parts. The first sections address three distinct groups involved in open textbook adoption: instructors, post-secondary institutions, and students. The second–most comprehensive–section focuses on the operational aspects of adoption: surveying instructors about, tracking usage of, and reporting out about open textbooks (and other OER). The last “Learn More” part provides additional adoption information.
