About Blackboard Course Content

Your Blackboard courses are organized and designed by your instructors and will be different course to course. On this page get a general overview of how to navigate and open files in them based on an example BTC course. On this page:

  • See if your courses are 'Blackboard Original' or 'Blackboard Ultra' 
  • Learn what is included on the Ultra course navigation bar, where to find your instructors information and how to get back to the main courses page
  • How to view and open files in Ultra

Blackboard original courses have a menu on the left side, it is typically gray.

  • Blackboard Ultra has a menu along the top
  • Includes a left side panel with instructor names, course details.
  • The course content is organized into "Learning Modules".

 You may still have courses in 'Blackboard Original' format, help is available but this page has information about Blackboard Ultra Courses. See the difference below to determine if your courses are 'Original' or 'Ultra'

Blackboard Ultra Course Overview

Once you have selected one of you courses from the courses page, you have access to that classes content, assignments, instructor information etc. Below is an example of a BTC Blackboard Ultra course to familiarize yourself review how a Blackboard Ultra course is layout is organized:

  1. The horizontal navigation bar along the top of the class which includes these important tabs:
    • Content: where your course materials such as lectures, readings and presentations, often organized into sections called "Learning modules" 
    • Calendar: find assignment due dates for that class
    • Announcements: where your instructor will share information and reminders with everyone in the class
    • Discussions: your course may include discussion assignments where you post and respond to other students
    • Gradebook: for that class
    • Messages: for that class
  2. Your course instructor/s, you can email them directly from here
  3. In the Details & Actions section you will find a list of your fellow classmates in the "class roster", a course description and more
  4. Learning modules are located in the Course Content tab. Click to open the learning modules and click on individual content items to view them

Going Back to the Main Courses Page

If you want to go to a different course, hit the "x" button to jump back to the main Blackboard Courses page.

Learning Modules: Viewing Content and Opening Files

Scroll down when you are in the 'Content' navigation bar tab. Content is organized into learning modules. See how you can navigate modules in this example:

  1. Click on the learning module to display all the content 
  2. Click on the title of the content item to view it, it may display a file like the example below. It has an icon an title like the image example below the content title is "View the PowerPoint: Chapter 1 People's Health"  
  3. Once you click on a title it will open a new window. Click on the file name to open and close the content
  4. Control your view of the file, the below example is a PowerPoint, you can jump forward in page numbers, zoom in and display it full-screen 
  5. Download the file in your preferred format
  6. Move forward or backward in the learning module or 'x' out of the file view to go back to the Content page of the course
